Emperor Norton wants you!!!
Our group, Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band (www.ensmb.com ), is currently looking for the right person to play guitar/banjo/mandolin/etc. with us. Ideally, we’re searching for a multi-instrumentalist (the more you bring to the table the better) to help us fill out our rhythm section, which includes vibes, accordion, upright bass & drums.
Our repertoire consists of original compositions inspired by Klezmer, Second line brass bands, pirates, circus music and Charles Mingus, along with traditionals ranging from gypsy folk songs to ragtime to 19th century marches.
In short, we consider ourselves a circus band! We have a deep love for circus history and for instrumental music, and, like the circus, we blend together a variety of backgrounds and influences into a rambunctious spectacle. Furthermore, we accompany/are accompanied by a rotating cast of performers including dancers, acrobats, aerialists, sideshow artists, and whatever other freaky people we can round up. In addition to having our very own troupe, the Madcap Rumpus Society (www.myspace.com/madcaprumpus ), we have also been invited to perform with other autonomous local burlesque groups and performance artists.
Not only are we pursuing various gig opportunities throughout the area, but we’re also currently working on a large scale performance for this May featuring the band and a cast of 25+ performers that combine theater, dance, sideshow and circus arts.
Please get in touch if you are a competent musician with enthusiasm for this project. You shouldn’t be afraid of dressing in a costume of sorts (which you get some input on), or playing for random events or in strange locations. (we do play regular club gigs as well). Familiarity with any of the above styles is great, (in particular, a strong jazz background would be useful) but is not required. Also, improvisation skills are needed for solos, adlibbing parts and comping. Basically, if you’ve got the talent, and you have the right personality and attitude, we’d like to add you to our menagerie.
Feel free to get in touch with any questions you might have.
